Ceramic Packing for High-Temperature Sealing

Bio Soluble Ceramic packing

Ceramic packing is a high-performance sealing solution designed for extreme temperature environments where conventional materials are no longer suitable.

Produced using advanced ceramic fibre technology, ceramic packing delivers excellent thermal stability, low heat transfer, and long service life in demanding industrial conditions.

Unlike glass-based alternatives, ceramic packing offers a higher capacity for continuous exposure to elevated temperatures, making it suitable for applications requiring sustained performance up to 1260 C.

Its low weight and robust construction allow it to perform reliably without placing excessive load on doors, flanges, or mating surfaces.

Ceramic Rope Packing

  • Ceramic rope packing is braided from refractory ceramic staple fibre yarn which consists of 80% ceramic fibre and 20% organic fibre.
  • The ceramic fibre itself is rated to 1260°C in optimum conditions, but the organic content will burn off at 200°C and so it should be noted that ceramic packing might ‘flash flame’ on first application. Furthermore, given 20% is driven off, the product is prone to considerable shrinking.
  • These yarns are reinforced either with steel wires (1000°C) or glass filaments (550°C) in order to ensure that mechanical strength is maintained.
  • Ceramic rope packings are available in three different constructions each with their own unique characteristics as explained below.

Applications

  • Rope Door Seals for Furnaces / Kilns / Industrial Ovens and Boilers.
  • ‘O’ Ring Rope Gasket Seals

Constructions Explained

Standard

rope packings are produced by braiding glass fibre yarn over a compact core of glass fibre yarns. They are compact, firm and flexible with high mechanical resistance and excellent static sealing properties.

Soft Core

rope packings are produced by braiding glass fibre yarns around a central core of C glass fibre insulation. Soft core packings whilst still dense, are lighter in weight but importantly more flexible than standard or brick solid packings. They have high thermal insulation capacity and excellent static sealing properties.

Brick Solid

rope packings are produced by the “Braid-over-Braid” method where glass fibre yarns are heavy braided over a very compact core of braided glass yarns. Brick solid packings are a total braided construction and are therefore exceptionally compact, brick solid in density and maintain superior mechanical resistance under pressure, compression and abrasion.

*Standard rope packings account for 90% of all packings produced, therefore if the construction type is not known, it is standard construction which we will quote for.

Enhancements

Textile Technologies can further enhance the above rope packings as follows:
Dry Graphite Dispersion
Apply a dry black graphite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and aesthetics.
Apply a wet black graphite dispersion to improve sealing qualities and resistance to hot gases.
Apply a vermiculite dispersion to improve abrasion resistance and increase its temperature resistance up to 1000°C.

Rope Packings can be covered with a metal outer braid of galvanised steel, stainless steel or Inconel.  This creates an extremely robust, abrasion resistant uniform seal.

Who is the UK’s Market leading stockist of Ceramic Packing (RCF) ?

Textile Technologies Europe Ltd

Bio Soluble Packing

They are reinforced with either glass or stainless steel fibre. Historically ceramic was reinforced with Inconel and whilst Inconel still appears on some old data sheets, there is no RCF Fibre reinforced with Inconel today.

20% and the organic matter should be Viscose which will gently smoke off on first application. For this reason, Ceramic Webbing SHOULD NOT be used where any residual smoke is considered undesirable. Of greater importance is the use of polyester as a replacement to Viscose. Textile Technologies Europe Ltd test their refractory ceramic fibre with recognised testing institutes to ensure there is no polyester in the ceramic yarns used. Polyester is used to cheapen the fibre but it melts and can cause serious damage to furnace door seals.

Yes, High Silica Fibre or Belcotex Fibre are considered the best alternatives though tend to command a higher price.

Construction and Material Composition

Ceramic packing consists of high-purity ceramic fibre yarns, often combined with glass fibre yarns to enhance handling and flexibility.

In reinforced grades, nickel chrome wire is introduced through wire reinforcement to improve mechanical strength and resistance to deformation under load.

The packing is braided into round, square, or rectangular profiles, ensuring uniform density and consistent sealing performance.

This braided construction provides excellent structural integrity while maintaining the flexibility required for effective sealing in dynamic and static applications.

Typical Industrial Applications

Ceramic packing is suitable for a wide range of high-temperature applications across heavy industry and process engineering. Common applications include:

  • Furnace door seals and access ports
  • Boilers and combustion chambers
  • Kilns and thermal processing units
  • Distillation equipment and high-temperature vessels
  • Industrial oven doors and inspection hatches

Due to its ceramic fibre composition and reinforced options, ceramic packing is frequently selected where glass packing may no longer provide sufficient performance.

Performance Benefits and Mechanical Qualities

Ceramic fibre inherently limits heat transfer, helping maintain stable temperatures within furnaces, boilers, and high-temperature process equipment.

The ceramic structure delivers higher capacity thermal resistance compared to standard glass-based packings.

Key qualities include:

  • High abrasion resistance for long service life
  • Enhanced mechanical strength under compression
  • Reinforced options for severe industrial environments
  • Stable performance at temperatures rated to 1260 C

These qualities make ceramic packing particularly suitable for high-load sealing where pressure, vibration, and repeated thermal cycling are present.

Reinforced Ceramic Packing Options

For demanding environments, reinforced ceramic packing is available with metal wire reinforcement.

The inclusion of nickel chrome wire significantly improves dimensional stability, mechanical strength, and resistance to mechanical wear.

Reinforced grades are particularly suitable for:

  • Large furnace door seals
  • Heavy-duty boilers
  • Applications involving vibration or movement~

This reinforcement ensures the ceramic packing maintains its sealing properties even under continuous thermal and mechanical stress.

Sizes, Availability, and Ordering Information

Ceramic packing is produced in a range of standard sizes, typically measured in mm, to suit common industrial sealing requirements. Non-standard dimensions can be produced on request, depending on the application and order volume.

Stock quantity varies by size and construction, with many ceramic packing products available for immediate order. Customers can select the required diameter, construction type, and reinforcement option based on their application needs.

Selection Guidance and Technical Notes

When selecting ceramic packing, note that operating temperature, pressure, movement, and chemical exposure must all be considered.

While ceramic fibre provides excellent thermal resistance, reinforced options should be specified where higher mechanical strength is required.

Important note: ceramic packing should be installed with appropriate compression to achieve an effective seal without excessive force, which can reduce service life.
